A symbol of our land’s rich and varied history

The Woolly Mammoth

To us, the mammoth represents strength, opportunity, adaptability and durability. Their presence on our land for tens of thousands of years is a reminder of the will needed to survive during dramatic climate and geological change.

That’s why the mammoth is our logo: a symbol of our land’s rich and varied history, from the receding waters of the Cretaceous Period that created the chalk seam connecting us to mainland Europe, to the snow-covered grasslands of the Ice Age, right through to the present day.

This incredible history has left its imprint on the soil, with each element playing its part in creating the unique land on which we plant our vines.

The photograph shows the fossil of a woolly mammoth tusk from the Pleistocene period (11,000 to 2 million years ago) which was found in a gravel pit on Little Walden Road, Saffron Walden in 1875. The fossil is currently on display at Saffron Walden Museum. Further information about the Museum can be found on the Museum’s website.
